Great News for Govt Employees! 9th Pay Scale with Huge Salary & Increment Increases…

The long-awaited 9th Pay Scale will bring about huge changes in the lives of government employees. The new draft indicates a significant policy change, aiming to offer substantially higher benefits to lower and mid-level officers and employees compared to the top-tier grades.

Here’s a quick look at the main points and proposed changes in the upcoming pay scale:

New increment rates, grade-wise:

The recommendation is to eliminate the current system of a uniform percentage rate of increment for all grades. From the draft:

6th to 20th Grade: 5% of basic salary (to maximize benefits to lower & middle-level staff).

5th grade: 4% of base salary.

3rd & 4th Grades:3.5% of Basic Salary

2nd grade: 2.75 percent of basic pay.

Grade 1: The increment is constant.

Suggested Basic Salary Increases

1st to 10th Grades: Proposed hike in basic salary by 100% (i.e. doubling the pay).

11th to 20th Grades: The proposal is to increase the basic salary of employees by up to 140%.

New Rules for Medical & Education Allowances 

The basic pay is seeing a big jump, but for the allowances, some changes have been suggested:

Medical Allowance: Proposed to reduce the maximum  BDT 5,000 to BDT 3,000.

Education Allowance (for children): Fixed at 1,500 BDT per month (the commission had proposed 2,000 BDT).

Date of Effect

Sources in the Finance Division and the Ministry of Public Administration said the whole of the basic salary portion of the new pay scale would be cleared from the government treasury in the current fiscal year 2026-27. All other allowances are to be paid in two phases in the coming fiscal year.

Note: After the introduction of the new pay scale, the existing interim special allowance of 2,000 to 3,000 BDT will automatically be phased out, as it will become redundant when basic salaries double.

If no decision is made in today’s meeting, the recommendations will be finalized in the next sitting and sent directly to the Cabinet for final approval.
